[[category:Research]] DEAN CAMPBELL Dark Corner File/Dean Campbell Notes from interview of Dean Campbell, September 15, 2022 Dean was very emphatic about the following reasons and justification for moonshining in the Dark Corner. Three reasons for moonshining 1. cultural …mountain people brought the knowledge of making spirits with them from Scotland, England and Ireland 2. Medicinal ….old, ancient remedies for their illnesses and pain 3. Economic…nullification act, low price for corn sold as grain Geography of the DC foothills and mountains reminded Scots/Irish of thir own highlands of Scotland, and it was remote enough to appeal to their independent spirits. Note about the lost chestnut forests that covered the are in north Greenville Country. They covered the area until the blight of the 1920s took them…they had been used in the hide tanning process. This was huge loss economically so many people in the DC turned to making moonshine for cash. Her books are a great source on the subject… and Dean often worked together. http://squireofdarkcorner.com/ A video clip of Dean Campbell giving a somewhat philosophical explanation of the Dark Corner.
