Note: if an article spans multiple columns, there are two options; simplest is to clip the whole set of columns (even though it will include other irrelevant content). The other option is to actually make two clippings, in which you should change the file name of the second clipping to add "a" and "b" after the page number.

This guide is for a particular project regarding collecting Dark Corner articles found on Newspapers.com.

  • Log in to newspapers.com using the Museum account. Note that there is only a single user allowed at one time with this login.
  • Gain access to the Museum's Google Drive folder for the Dark Corner newspaper archive.
  • create a search:
    • search term is "dark corner" (using the quotation marks)
    • Search date using a year range with the earliest year needed (1905, as of March 17, 2023)
    • Search location: South Carolina
  • Refine the search:
    • Change the newspaper filter to Greenville News
    • Change the Sort to "by oldest"
  • Find the next entry chronologically not already in our collection; click on the title
  • Find the specific article on the page and determine its relevancy
  • Clip and download the article
    • "clip" button in the top right
    • move and resize the window to select the article
    • save clipping
    • select "print/download" in the top right
    • select "save as JPG." This will download it to your computer.
  • On your file name, add a brief descriptor (e.g., change the URL file name "News.jpg" to "News-this thing happened.jpg")
  • Use the left-arrow icon in the top left corner to return to your search results.
  • Repeat that process for the next chronological article.
  • After collecting a set of articles, upload them to the Google Drive folder (drag and drop from your file folder to the Drive browser window).

Note: if an article spans multiple columns or pages, there are two options; simplest, if on one page, is to clip the whole set of columns (even though it will include other irrelevant content). The other option is to actually make two clippings, in which you should change the file name of the clippings to add "a" and "b" after the page numbers.
